Most of the concrete repair we do is the step before a coating. A crack that gets skimmed over will come back through the finish within a season, so we open it up, chase it out, fill it with a structural patch and grind it flat before any coating goes down.
Common ones around here: shrinkage cracks across a driveway, spalling at a pool deck edge where the surface has flaked off, settlement at a garage apron, and pop-outs where the aggregate has worked loose. Some of these are cosmetic and some are telling you something about the base underneath. We will tell you which one you have.
